Finn Slough is a working fishing community located in Richmond, BC that was established by Finnish pioneers who purchased land at Finn Road in the early 1890's. Around the same time, the first Finnish settlers fleeing poverty and repression of of the Russian Empire were arriving to set up the utopian community of Sointula on Malcom Island off the northern part of Vancouver Island. In the last 125 years, the village has developed without the organization of property boundaries, city ordinances, provincial regulations or any governing body. Finn Slough is an example of a community that can be developed, self regulated and coexisting with the Lower Fraser wetlands environment with little impact in marked contrast to the rapid, high density urbanization of downtown Richmond or Deltaport expansion.
